The Business Council of Alabama's annual Governmental Affairs Conference, BCA 2019, is August 9-11 at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama. The conference will begin on Friday evening and conclude Sunday morning.

 

This annual conference, which routinely attracts more than 500 guests, is always a favorite summertime gathering for lawmakers, business leaders and governmental affairs professionals. The weekend provides a unique networking opportunity to discuss politics and policy with friends and colleagues in a beautiful, informal and relaxed setting.

Demand to live and work in Alabama is at an unprecedented high, and this growth brings new development and opportunity for new and existing businesses alike. This panel will explore how we continue to attract top talent to Alabama as well as take a closer look at the issues that come with growth, including building a strong and diverse workforce, infrastructure development and economic development. Moderated by Regions Financial Corporation’s Jeff Rabren, the panel will include Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Director Kenneth Boswell; Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield; Chairman and President of the Business Education Alliance Joe Morton, Ph.D.; and state Rep. Bill Poole, chairman of the House Ways and Means Education Committee.

 

Addressing Alabama’s Rural Health Care Challenges - Azalea A

Providing access to health care continues to be a challenge in Alabama, especially in rural parts of our state. This panel brings together top thinkers and practitioners to discuss innovative approaches as to what obstacles lie ahead for health care access and how this affects industry and community development.  This panel will also explore how creative partnerships can help protect health care providers in rural areas. Moderated by Selma-based businessman Denson Henry of Henry Brick Company, Inc., the panel will include Representative from BCBS; Dr. Selwyn Vickers, Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham; Elba Mayor Mickey Murdock; and state Rep. A.J. McCampbell.

 

Solving Alabama’s Prison Crisis – Azalea C

Alabama’s prison system is currently facing a functional conundrum with overcrowding, overstretched staffs, and mental health concerns. This panel will highlight the challenges and opportunities facing Alabama’s prison system while focusing the discussion on what role the federal government might play, the perception-based realities of the dialogue of the prison reform, and how solutions can be achieved in a way that creates a more efficient prison system that is less burdensome on Alabama’s citizens. Moderated by state Rep. Connie Rowe, the panel will include Dayne Cutrell, chief of staff for U.S. Senator Richard Shelby; state Sen. Cam Ward, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee; state Rep. Rod Scott; and Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner Jeff Dunn.
